Romania: The hidden gem of the Balkans!

Isn’t it a huge mistake only traveling to places everyone else does? There are plenty of destinations out there which we’ve never heard of before, places that don’t get as much exposure as others, even though they lack nothing compared to the most popular travel choices! A country that is full of such secrets is Romania, where one can enjoy tradition, architecture and unique sights in different and less known areas!

Maramures

The wider area of Maramures is an ideal place for anyone who loves tradition and folklore! Divided into both sides of the Romanian and Ukrainian border, it enchants every visitor who appreciates the traditional customs and traditions that unfold before their eyes. There you will find villages brought straight from fairytales, where the past is harmoniously intertwined with everyday life. The rural customs of the locals, the ornate wood-carved gates and the picturesque Gothic wooden churches, the handmade carpets and the pieces of embroidery are just some of the reasons that turn villages like Iza, Barsana, Sapanta and many others into unique and special destinations. In Sapanta you have to visit the Merry Cemetery, a folklore cemetery where blue colours and carved details predominate. Undoubtedly, you’ll have never seen anything like it!

A Merry Cemetery? How can a cemetery be merry? The Merry Cemetery of Sapanta, in the northern part of Romania, claims to be. If nothing else, it is at least aesthetically pleasing, with its colourful crosses with naive paintings of each person buried there. Poems are also written on each cross to describe the life each has lived, with some being quite funny. It's a way for people's memory to live on. But, do you think you could be merry, visiting a cemetery?

Brasov

Brasov was the most pleasant surprise for me in Romania, as it was the first unknown place I discovered in the country! The main square has absolutely nothing to envy from those of central European cities, while the city itself hides remarkable spots that you will definitely want to visit! Do not forget to admire the Black Church (Biserica Neagra), and walk in Strada Sforii, one of the narrowest alleys of Europe! You will literally not be able to stretch your arms! Half an hour from Brasov, you will meet Bran and the castle of Vlad Tepes on whom the legend of Count Dracula was based. If you feel like traveling for another half hour you will be able to tour the beautiful Castle of Peles, with a visit to Sinaia!

Check here all the available options for your stay in Brasov!

Sibiu

The picturesque roofs of the buildings and their special architecture, the cobbled streets and the Barrel Tower are just some of the reasons that make Sibiu a wonderful travel destination. The Bridge of Lies is also very interesting: According to the myth, women would come to this bridge to confess their love to their partner, taking a purity oath. If this turned out to be a lie on the wedding day, the husband would have the right to throw the bride off the same bridge!

Cluj Napoca

This student city is the heart of nightlife, and you can enjoy yourself in many different ways! Try the local dish Varză à la Cluj, a recipe with rice, meat, cumin, thyme and paprika, walk in the Botanical Garden or just enjoy a walk in this beautiful city.

Cabbage ‘à la Cluj’ – a warming winter dish from Cluj city in Transylvania. Layers of rice, minced pork, sauerkraut, tomato sauce, and the unmissable sour cream on top. There are as many variations of this recipe as women in Cluj 🙂 For instance, some people don’t use rice, but alternate sauerkraut with unfermented cabbage (we call it ‘sweet' cabbage). What makes this dish one of our Romanian soul foods is its sweet-sour umami flavour, the stickiness of the rice, the bite that the cabbage still holds, the juices on the bottom of the pan, the way it goes with ‘tuica’, the Romanian plum brandy, that sets your body on fire the moment you touch it. I’m telling you, you will tuck into this dish over and over again. #comfortfood #winterfood #varzaalacluj #familyrecipe #soulfood #onepotmeal #onmytable

Sighisoara

This colorful medieval city is definitely worth your time, not only for its special beauty but also for the different attractions it offers. The visitor can wander the picturesque cobbled streets, admire the 9 turrets that adorn the area, and also take a tour at the house of Vlad Tepes, the tough leader who inspired the legend of Dracula! An alternative is to visit the “Torture Room“, a museum you probably haven’t met before!

Hunedoara

One of the visits you should not miss during your stay in Romania is Hunedoara. More specifically, if you love landscapes that seem to emerge from a fairytale, you should include the impressive Corvinilor Castle in your travel plans! The turrets, the wooden bridge and the moat are just some of the features of this castle that will make you fall for it!

Timisoara

Some people describe this city as “Little Vienna” and not unjustly! Walking through the streets, one is impressed by the baroque architecture, the colours of the buildings and the colourful flower arrangements that adorn it. One of the surprises in store is the Strada Alba Iulia, a pedestrian road with a roof of umbrellas of various colours!

Castelul De Lut Valea Zanelor

I couldn’t help but keep the best for the end! Castelul De Lut Valea Zanelor is a gnome village made of clay and sand, with strange roofs and a dreamy atmosphere. It is small in size, with very few houses, but you will definitely love it! It will be an original new experience, and especially if you are a fan of photography it will be an unforgettable time visiting it!
